Australian shares decline as banking sector struggles
Australian stock market performance

Key Takeaways

  • Australian shares fell 0.3% on Tuesday, with banking stocks leading the decline.
  • Mining stocks, supported by stronger copper prices, showed gains but were not enough to offset losses.
  • Investors await Wednesday’s inflation data for clues on the Reserve Bank of Australia’s rate decision.

Australian shares experienced a decline on Tuesday, with the S&P/ASX 200 index falling 0.3% to 8,783.00 by 0036 GMT. This marked a reversal from the previous day’s 0.2% gain.

The financial sector, comprising the 'Big Four' banks, saw a significant drop, with a 0.9% decline, marking its steepest fall in nearly two weeks. Each of the major banks—CBA, NAB, ANZ, and Westpac—saw their shares fall between 0.8% and 1.2%.

Healthcare stocks also faced a challenging day, with a 0.7% drop, their worst performance since October 2. Notable declines were observed in CSL and Cochlear, which dropped 1% and 1.5%, respectively.

Casino operator Star Entertainment reported a significant turnaround, swinging to a quarterly profit and seeing its shares surge by 21.7%, marking the largest intraday gain in 11 months.

Mining stocks, buoyed by stronger copper prices, managed to advance 1.1%. Rio Tinto and BHP saw gains of 1.3% and 1.7%, respectively. Gold stocks also showed a 0.3% increase, reflecting the rise in bullion prices.

Energy stocks inched up 0.3%, despite a slight fall in crude prices, which remained around their six-month highs due to ongoing attacks on Saudi Arabia. Santos and Woodside Energy added between 0.6% and 0.5%, respectively.

Investors are closely monitoring Wednesday’s quarterly inflation data, which will provide insights into the Reserve Bank of Australia’s next policy move. Market expectations suggest a 65% chance of a fifth rate hike this year at the November 3 meeting.

New Zealand’s benchmark S&P/NZX 50 index also saw a decline, falling 0.8% to 13,619.15, marking its worst session in over three weeks. The focus has shifted to Wednesday’s central bank decision, with over 80% of economists predicting a quarter-point rate hike.
