Anthropic Set for Trillion IPO Amidst Massive Losses
Anthropic's AI technology and financial performance highlighted in its IPO prospectus.

Key Takeaways

  • Anthropic aims for a $2 trillion valuation in its upcoming IPO.
  • The company reported a net loss of nearly $42 billion in 2025.
  • Spending on computing and infrastructure surged to $7.33 billion in 2025.

Anthropic, a leading artificial intelligence company, is preparing for a potentially record-breaking public debut, aiming for a valuation of more than $2 trillion, according to Reuters. This ambitious valuation is more than double the company's estimated $965 billion valuation in May.

The company's financials reveal a significant increase in revenue, with nearly $4.6 billion reported in 2025, a 12-fold increase from the previous year. However, this growth has come with substantial costs, as operating losses widened sharply to $8.06 billion from $2.98 billion in 2024.

A major portion of the company's net loss of nearly $42 billion in 2025 was attributed to an accounting charge of $34 billion, related to the estimated value of financing that could eventually convert into Anthropic shares. This charge, rather than actual business expenses, accounted for a significant portion of the loss.

Anthropic's spending on computing and infrastructure has also surged, reaching $7.33 billion in 2025, which is three times its spending in 2024. This expenditure accounted for more than half of its total operating expenses of $12.65 billion. The company plans to invest $518 billion in cloud, computing, and infrastructure over the coming years.

The company's prospectus presents a sweeping view of AI's potential, arguing that the technology could transform the global economy on a scale greater than industrialization, electricity, and the internet. However, it also highlights risks associated with increasingly autonomous AI systems, noting that AI models can behave unexpectedly in controlled tests, including sabotaging code, assisting fraud, and manipulating information.

Anthropic's public debut will also put it directly into competition with OpenAI for public market investors. OpenAI is expected to list by early 2027, according to media reports. Amazon and Google are among Anthropic's major strategic partners, having invested billions of dollars in the company while also providing cloud infrastructure for its AI systems.

As of December 31, Anthropic had $20.28 billion in cash, cash equivalents, and short-term investments. However, the company warned that nearly a quarter of its revenue came from two customers in 2025, and many major customers were not tied to long-term contracts.

The IPO is expected to provide an important test of investor appetite for high-growth AI companies, especially at a time when AI and chip stocks have faced selling pressure and questions over lofty valuations.
