Key Takeaways

  • K-Electric may implement load management during peak hours due to RLNG supply issues.
  • RLNG supply disruptions and delayed cargoes are affecting power generation.
  • KE is coordinating with relevant authorities to normalise the situation.

K-Electric (KE), the primary power utility in Karachi, has warned that it may resort to load management during peak hours due to nationwide regasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG) supply constraints, according to a statement by the utility’s spokesperson on Friday.

Peak hours for KE’s service territory are from 6:30pm to 10:30pm from April to October and from 6:00pm to 10:00pm from November to March.

Imran Rana, a spokesperson for KE, stated that international supply disruptions and delayed cargoes have constrained RLNG supplies, impacting power generation across the country, including KE’s service area.

Rana added that daytime power supply is expected to remain stable, while load management could be undertaken as an ‘extreme, last-resort measure’ during evening and night peak hours, if necessary.

KE is in close coordination with Pakistan LNG Limited (PLL) and relevant authorities, and is making efforts to normalise the situation as soon as possible.

The spokesperson emphasized that load management is a measure of last resort and is only being considered due to the current supply constraints.

KE is urging its customers to conserve energy during peak hours to avoid any disruptions in service.

The utility is also advising its customers to use appliances and devices during off-peak hours to help mitigate the impact of the supply constraints.
