Police in Karachi have arrested three suspects in the assault of a senior faculty member from the University of Karachi and his nephew, following a minor traffic accident near Safoora Chowrangi.

East Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Zubair Nazir Sheikh informed Dawn that the victims were Dr Professor Mohammed Arif Khan Saqi, the chairman of the Islamic Learning Department, and his nephew, Mohammed Waheed Rehman.

According to SSP Sheikh, the professor was traveling on a main road when a double-cabin vehicle hit his car, causing damage to the bonnet.

The situation escalated when the professor asked the occupants of the vehicle to compensate for the damage, leading to an altercation.

The suspects then allegedly exited their vehicle and began assaulting the professor and his nephew, with one of the suspects reportedly bringing gunmen who also joined the assault.

Dr Saqi recounted that he and his nephew were beaten on the road and later taken to a nearby eatery, where they were beaten again before the suspects fled.

The police registered a first information report (FIR) under sections 147, 148, 149, 324, and 342 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) following the incident.

SSP Sheikh stated that the police conducted raids and arrested three suspects, adding that efforts were ongoing to arrest the remaining suspects.

The suspects are reportedly influential persons who own a restaurant in Safoora, according to Sachal police station House Officer (SHO) Aijaz Pathan.

The professor was travelling along a main road on his way to the university, while the suspects were reversing their vehicle when it hit his.
