The Punjab Communication and Works (C&W) Department has launched an initiative to monitor vehicle axle loads and enforce strict action against overloaded vehicles. This move was discussed during a meeting chaired by Punjab Communication Minister Malik Sohaib Ahmad Bherth.
According to the department, Mobile Weight Management Systems (MWMS) will be used at strategic points such as Kallar Kahar, Choa Saidan Shah Road, Tarbela, Dhok Haliyar in Attock district, Lillah-Jhelum Road, Multan-Vehari Road, and Jhang-Shorkot Road.
The decision to adopt a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model for long-term axle load management was also made. The minister directed authorities to take strict legal action against vehicles found violating axle load limits, emphasizing the importance of road safety and maintaining the quality and durability of roads.
Minister Bherth stated that effective axle load management would deliver more sustainable results compared to previous methods. He highlighted that this initiative is part of a broader plan to improve road conditions in Punjab.
The secretary of communications, special additional secretary, chief engineers, and other relevant officials attended the meeting where these decisions were made. The department emphasized the need for cooperation between public and private sectors to ensure the success of the program.
Officials informed that MWMS units would be deployed at specific locations to monitor vehicle weight and identify overloaded vehicles on major roads. This technology is expected to provide accurate data and facilitate quicker enforcement actions.
The minister’s directive underscores the seriousness with which the government views this issue, aiming to reduce accidents caused by overloaded vehicles and extend the lifespan of road infrastructure.
