Pakistan has formally requested Japanese financial assistance for its ambitious ML-1 Railway Project. During a meeting between Minister for Economic Affairs Ahad Cheema and JICA President Dr. Tanaka Akihiko, the proposal was discussed.
The ML-1 project is integral to Pakistan’s development plans under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) framework, aiming to upgrade the country's main railway line. The initiative is expected to enhance transport infrastructure, boost trade and industrial connectivity, and contribute to long-term economic growth.
Cheema highlighted that while other development partners like the Asian Development Bank are already supporting the project, he invited JICA to join in financing efforts. He emphasized the strategic importance of this modernization for Pakistan’s transportation sector.
During the meeting, Cheema also proposed cooperation on workforce development, rural internet infrastructure, and feasibility studies for major projects. Additionally, he suggested greater collaboration in preserving Gandhara heritage sites to promote tourism.
Dr. Tanaka acknowledged the project's significance and stated that JICA would consider the proposal as part of its future engagement with Pakistan. The meeting underscored the ongoing commitment between both nations towards expanding development cooperation.
Cheema expressed appreciation for Japan’s longstanding support, noting that over the past seven decades, Official Development Assistance from Japan has amounted to approximately $11.7 billion and supported sectors such as energy, transport, agriculture, water resources, health, education, industry, and security.
Both parties agreed to maintain close engagement to further strengthen their development partnership, with JICA considering various proposals for future cooperation.
