Waqar Zaka to Sell G-Wagon Prize, Focus on Education

Key Takeaways

  • Technology entrepreneur Waqar Zaka will sell his recently won Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon.
  • Proceeds will fund education initiatives for madrasas and students aiming for the Fields Medal.
  • Zaka emphasizes accountability through regular tree-planting activities among recipients.

Technology entrepreneur Waqar Zaka, a Stanford University graduate, has announced his intention to sell the new Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon he won in the TradFi Masters competition. The proceeds will be directed towards educational initiatives.

Zaka’s initiative aims to support madrasas and Hafiz-e-Quran students, as well as any Pakistani who can stand out and participate in the Fields Medal for mathematics. He plans to target selected madrasas where students have become experts in the Quran, introducing structured mathematics and physics programmes.

The goal is to enable these students to progress into advanced science education and potentially compete for global recognition, including the Fields Medal, which could lead to nominations for Nobel Prizes.

Unlike many influencers who display luxury cars prominently, Zaka is focusing on liquidating the prize vehicle to channel resources into education rather than personal showmanship. He believes that free money without work or responsibility leads to no real progress.

Zaka has participated in international trading tournaments for the past five years and finished third in a 2022 event, seventh during a Covid-era contest, fifth in a 2024 crypto tournament before claiming the top spot in the recent multi-asset TradFi Masters. He notes that most such online trading contests are not government-regulated.

He draws attention to the CME Futures tournament in the United States, which is largely demo-based with modest prizes, and highlights the uniqueness of current multi-asset platforms offering far bigger prizes than demo trading contests or the Robbins Cup.

Zaka’s latest move underscores his long-standing advocacy for education-driven development. He believes that Pakistan needs more Nobel-level talent emerging from diverse backgrounds, including traditional religious institutions.

A key condition attached to any support is that recipients must plant trees on a regular basis and send progress updates on WhatsApp to ensure accountability.
