Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has publicly criticized FIFA’s controversial plan to sell a 20% stake in the World Cup, stating that its withdrawal was 'absolutely necessary and beyond question.'

In a statement, Wenger clarified his stance on the plan, emphasizing his belief in an independent FIFA committed to transparency and integrity.

The decision to withdraw the project was made after widespread criticism from football associations such as UEFA, which threatened to boycott World Cup competitions if the plan proceeded.

Kevin Lamour, FIFA’s chief operating officer, also criticized Infantino for deceiving staff about the plan. Several European associations have withdrawn their support for Infantino in anticipation of his re-election bid.

The Football Association of Wales (FAW) confirmed its withdrawal of support on Monday, while the English Football Association is reportedly writing to FIFA to confirm a similar stance.

UEFA issued a statement welcoming the withdrawal but expressed loss of confidence in Infantino. Clubs within the European Football Clubs group have also contacted FIFA expressing concerns about the plan.

Infantino faces an uphill battle as he seeks re-election for his final term, needing 106 votes from FIFA’s 211 members to secure another four-year tenure.

The decision to withdraw the project was absolutely necessary and beyond question, because I firmly believe in an independent FIFA that serves our game with commitment, transparency, and integrity.
