In addition to his playing career, Smith has held various coaching roles, most notably as batting coach for the Hobart Hurricanes and Cricket Tasmania. He has also been part of the coaching staff for three HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchises: Islamabad United, Karachi Kings, and Multan Sultans.

The PCB expressed optimism about Smith’s appointment, stating that his experience will significantly bolster Pakistan's batting unit in both Test and limited-overs formats. The board believes this move will help the team perform better on home soil and abroad.

Smith is expected to work closely with the players to refine their techniques and strategies, aiming to improve overall batting consistency and effectiveness. His dual role as coach for both formats of cricket will ensure a seamless transition between Test matches and one-day internationals.
