Millions at risk of cardiac arrest death due to lack of defibrillators

Millions at risk of cardiac arrest death due to lack of defibrillators

Key Takeaways

  • More than 16 million people in England and Wales live more than a 1km round trip from the nearest 24/7 accessible defibrillator.
  • 35 million people – over half the population – do not live within three to five minutes of a defibrillator.
  • Early CPR and defibrillation can double the chance of survival during cardiac arrest.

Research by the Heart Restart campaign has revealed that millions of people in England and Wales are at significant risk due to the lack of readily available defibrillators. The analysis, based on publicly available data, highlights a critical gap in emergency medical response capabilities.

According to the findings, more than 16 million individuals live farther than a 1km round trip from the nearest 24/7 accessible defibrillator. This figure is particularly concerning given that out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur frequently; approximately 40,000 such incidents are reported annually in the UK.

The Heart Restart campaign's analysis further indicates that about half of these individuals live more than a 1km round trip from a 24/7 accessible defibrillator. This distance can be crucial during an emergency, as early intervention is critical for survival. The recommended response time for a defibrillator is within three to five minutes.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) combined with defibrillation significantly improves the chances of survival during cardiac arrest. However, current statistics show that only about one in ten people survive such incidents. This stark contrast underscores the urgent need for increased access to defibrillators and better public awareness.

The Heart Restart campaign's research also highlights the disparity in accessibility across different regions within England and Wales. Some areas have a higher concentration of defibrillators, while others are severely under-served. This uneven distribution exacerbates the risk faced by many individuals.

Dr. Sarah Thompson, spokesperson for the Heart Restart campaign, emphasized the importance of addressing this issue: 'Every minute counts in a cardiac arrest situation. We need to ensure that everyone has quick and easy access to defibrillators.'

The findings have prompted calls for government action and increased public awareness about the location and use of defibrillators. Campaigners are urging local authorities and healthcare providers to collaborate on improving emergency response times and increasing the number of accessible defibrillators in high-risk areas.
