Petrol and diesel prices hike under new daily pricing mechanism

Petrol and diesel prices hike under new daily pricing mechanism

Key Takeaways

  • Petrol price increased by Rs4.93 per litre.
  • Diesel price raised by Rs7.15 per litre.
  • New system replaces weekly review with daily updates.

The federal government has implemented a new pricing mechanism for petroleum products, increasing the prices of petrol and diesel effective from July 22. Petrol now costs Rs320.73 per litre, up by Rs4.93 from its previous price of Rs315.80. Similarly, high-speed diesel (HSD) has seen a rise to Rs367.21 per litre, an increase of Rs7.15 over the earlier rate of Rs360.06.

According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Energy (Petroleum Division), this change is part of a shift towards daily review and adjustment of petroleum prices in response to fluctuations in international oil markets. The previous system, which was based on weekly reviews, has been replaced with this more frequent mechanism.

The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) revised the ex-depot prices as per the government’s updated pricing framework. This new approach is expected to provide greater flexibility and responsiveness to market conditions, ensuring that local fuel prices align closely with global trends.

While the exact impact on consumers remains to be seen, this move reflects a strategic shift in how Pakistan manages its petroleum pricing policies. The daily review system aims to reduce price volatility and ensure more accurate reflection of international oil prices.

The government’s decision comes at a time when global crude oil prices have been experiencing significant fluctuations due to various geopolitical and economic factors. By adopting a more dynamic pricing mechanism, the authorities hope to mitigate some of these external pressures on local fuel markets.
