Strait of Hormuz Vessel Crossings Drop Amid US-Iran Tensions

Strait of Hormuz Vessel Crossings Drop Amid US-Iran Tensions

Key Takeaways

  • Vessel crossings via the Strait of Hormuz decreased to four on Monday.
  • US launches ninth night of strikes on Iran following recent attacks.
  • Yemen’s Houthis impose naval blockade on Saudi Arabia, threatening global energy supplies.

Shipping data from Kpler showed a significant drop in vessel crossings via the Strait of Hormuz at the start of the week. On Monday, only four commodity vessels crossed the strait, down from seven the previous day. The majority of these vessels were on the Iranian route.

Among the crossing vessels, two tankers exited the strait—one carrying petrochemicals and one empty—while two entered, including a bitumen tanker and an oil tanker. Notably, there were no visible very large crude carrier (VLCC) or liquefied natural gas tankers passing through on Monday.

The situation intensified as Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis announced the imposition of a naval blockade against Saudi Arabia, a move that could disrupt global energy supplies beyond the Gulf region. This development comes amidst heightened tensions between the US and Iran following a series of attacks.

In response to recent Iranian attacks, the United States has renewed its military strikes on Iran for the ninth consecutive night. The US military stated that it had completed these latest strikes, marking the 10th successive night of attacks since the escalation began.

Meanwhile, Greek shipping company Dynacom Tankers reported that two of its managed vessels were hit by projectiles of unknown origin while sailing off the coast of Oman on Monday. Additionally, a third tanker was struck by a drone at Russia’s Novorossiysk CPC terminal in the Black Sea.

These incidents have raised concerns about the safety and reliability of maritime trade routes through the Strait of Hormuz, which is crucial for global energy supplies. The reduction in vessel crossings underscores the growing caution among shipping companies operating in the region.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations agency reported receiving multiple reports that a tanker had been struck by an unknown projectile in the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday. This adds to the list of recent incidents and highlights the ongoing risks faced by vessels navigating through this strategic waterway.
