Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand to Visit Pakistan

Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand to Visit Pakistan

Key Takeaways

  • Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand is set to visit Pakistan on Monday.
  • The visit marks the first such trip in 20 years and will cover trade, investment, education, and people-to-people exchanges.
  • Anita Anand will meet with Pakistan's leadership, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand is scheduled to visit Pakistan on Monday, marking the first such trip in two decades. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) announced that this visit underscores the shared commitment between both countries to expand mutual cooperation.

The visit will encompass discussions on a wide range of issues including trade and investment, education, and people-to-people exchanges. According to Global Affairs Canada (GAC), the talks will also cover regional and global developments of mutual interest. The Foreign Office stated that these discussions aim to strengthen existing bilateral relations, which are underpinned by extensive people-to-people ties.

Anita Anand’s visit is particularly significant as it comes at a time when both countries have been working towards enhancing their economic and cultural ties. Last month, Canada hosted the second round of negotiations toward a Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement with Pakistan. In February this year, Pakistan and Canada emphasized the importance of cooperation in trade and investment during the sixth round of Bilateral Political Consultations held in Islamabad.

The MoFA noted that Anita Anand will also call on Pakistan's leadership, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The visit is expected to further strengthen the cordial bilateral relations between the two nations, anchored by close people-to-people ties and a vibrant Pakistani diaspora in Canada.

Global Affairs Canada highlighted that more than 300,000 Canadians of Pakistani origin reside in Canada, while approximately 20,000 Canadians are currently based in Pakistan. This significant diaspora plays a crucial role in maintaining the strong bilateral relations between the two countries.

Following her visit to Pakistan, Minister Anand will proceed to the Philippines for an official engagement at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The visit is seen as a testament to Canada’s commitment to fostering regional cooperation and dialogue.
