Petroleum Minister Announces Daily Fuel Price Adjustments

Petroleum Minister Announces Daily Fuel Price Adjustments

Key Takeaways

  • Daily fuel prices will be adjusted to curb market abuse and ensure fair pricing.
  • The decision follows renewed hostilities between Iran and the US, affecting international market prices.
  • Ogra will publish daily price information along with factors leading to changes.

Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik has announced that fuel prices in Pakistan will now be adjusted on a daily basis. This move aims to curb market abuse and ensure fair pricing for consumers, according to the minister's statement during a meeting with key petroleum sector stakeholders.

Malik stated that the new mechanism would promote transparency, strengthen competition, and shield consumers from abrupt price distortions. The decision was made in response to fluctuations in international market prices due to renewed hostilities between Iran and the US, which have been affecting fuel prices since early March.

The Petroleum Division has been working closely with the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) and industry stakeholders to finalise comprehensive standard operating procedures for the transition. The minister informed participants that technical matters such as the Inland Freight Equalisation Margin (IFEM), refinery adjustments, and true-up mechanisms are being addressed through close coordination.

During a press conference alongside Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, Malik thanked the nation on behalf of the government for their patience during this period. He noted that despite efforts by Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the US-Iran conflict appeared to be escalating in the region.

Malik stated that Ogra would not only publish daily fuel rates on its website but also provide detailed information about the factors leading to these prices. He acknowledged that this decision might add to the burden on citizens but assured them of the necessity for such a move in ensuring fair market-based pricing.

The government has constituted a dedicated committee to oversee the transition and resolve any implementation issues through consensus. Malik emphasized the roles of Ogra, district administrations, oil marketing companies (OMCs), dealers, Oil Companies Advisory Council (OCAC), and Oil Marketing Association of Pakistan (OMAP) in ensuring the success of this reform.

The meeting also reviewed operational issues related to supply chain logistics, inventory management, and real-time data availability. The government assured stakeholders of its full support in addressing these challenges and facilitating a smooth transition to the new pricing mechanism.

Daily fuel price adjustments will help curb market abuse, eliminate opportunities for windfall gains, and ensure greater transparency and fair pricing for consumers.
