Petroleum minister consults industry on daily fuel pricing reforms

Petroleum minister consults industry on daily fuel pricing reforms

Key Takeaways

  • Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik held a meeting with key stakeholders to discuss the transition from weekly to daily fuel pricing.
  • The reform aims to promote transparency, strengthen competition and ensure fair market-based prices for consumers.
  • Fuel prices will now be fixed on a daily basis due to fluctuations in international market prices following renewed hostilities between Iran and the US.

Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik has initiated reforms aimed at changing the frequency of fuel price adjustments from weekly to daily. During a meeting with industry stakeholders, Malik emphasized that this change would enhance transparency and competition in the market while ensuring fair prices for consumers.

The decision comes amid ongoing hostilities between Iran and the United States, which have led to fluctuations in international oil markets. According to Malik, these changes are necessary to adapt to the volatile environment and provide more accurate pricing information.

Malik stated that the government had been announcing weekly revisions to fuel prices since early March, alongside measures for conserving fuel amid possible supply disruptions due to the conflict in the Middle East. In April, targeted relief measures were also announced to provide subsidised fuel to citizens.

The Petroleum Minister further noted that despite efforts by military and political leaders, including Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the situation appeared to be escalating. He thanked the nation for their patience during this challenging period.

In a press conference alongside Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, Malik announced that the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) would now have the responsibility of determining fuel prices on a daily basis based on international market trends. Ogra will also publish the factors leading to these price changes, providing greater transparency for consumers.

While acknowledging that this decision might add to the burden on citizens, Malik stated that they would understand why it was necessary for the state. He added that the cabinet and prime minister had made this decision in the interest of ensuring fair pricing and market stability.

The transition from weekly to daily fuel pricing is expected to provide more frequent updates on price changes, reflecting real-time market conditions. This move aims to reduce speculation and ensure that consumers have access to accurate information about fuel prices.

The reform would promote transparency, strengthen competition and ensure fair, market-based prices for consumers.
