PHOTA Approves Transplant Licenses for Three Hospitals

Key Takeaways

  • PHOTA approved renal transplantation licenses for two hospitals in Multan and Lahore.
  • PKLI&RC, Lahore, received permission to perform pancreas transplants for the next three years.
  • The authority plans to implement a paperless system.

The Punjab Human Organ Transplantation Authority (PHOTA) has approved transplant licenses for three hospitals in Pakistan. Multan Institute of Kidney Diseases and Saleem Memorial Hospital Lahore have been granted renal transplantation licenses, while the Pakistan Kidney and Liver Institute and Research Center (PKLI&RC), also based in Lahore, was given permission to perform pancreas transplants for the next three years.

According to PHOTA's announcement, these approvals are aimed at enhancing organ transplant services across Punjab. The decision is expected to improve access to life-saving treatments for patients suffering from kidney and pancreatic diseases.

Dr. Aamir Khan, Director of Multan Institute of Kidney Diseases, expressed his satisfaction with the approval: 'This is a significant step towards providing better healthcare services in our region.'

PKLI&RC's Dr. Fatima Ali stated that the permission to perform pancreas transplants will greatly benefit patients in Lahore and surrounding areas. She added, 'We are committed to ensuring high standards of care and patient safety during these procedures.'

PHOTA has also announced plans to implement a paperless system for organ transplantation processes. This move is expected to streamline administrative tasks and reduce paperwork, making the entire process more efficient.

The approval comes at a time when demand for organ transplants in Pakistan continues to rise due to increasing awareness about the benefits of such treatments. According to PHOTA data, there has been a 20% increase in transplant requests over the past year.

Dr. Zainab Ahmed, Secretary General of PHOTA, highlighted the importance of these approvals: 'These licenses will not only enhance our capacity but also ensure that patients receive timely and quality care.'

The implementation of the paperless system is expected to be rolled out in phases over the next six months. PHOTA has partnered with technology firms to develop a robust digital platform for organ transplantation.

Health experts believe that these developments will significantly improve the organ transplant landscape in Punjab, providing hope to thousands of patients waiting for life-saving treatments.
