  • Balogun reflected on the difficult situation, saying it caused controversy among teammates.

US striker Folarin Balogun faced significant controversy after FIFA suspended his one-game red-card ban for a one-year probationary period during the World Cup. The decision, which cleared him to play in a crucial match against Belgium, drew criticism from European football governing body UEFA and former referees.

Balogun was sent off during the team’s 2-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina on July 1 after planting his boot into the ankle of defender Tarik Muharemovic. FIFA's decision to suspend Balogun's ban for a one-year probationary period became one of the biggest talking points of the tournament, with US President Donald Trump claiming credit.

In an interview with CBS Mornings on Tuesday, Balogun reflected on the situation, stating, 'My initial reaction was I was happy to be back in the team. But when I kind of started to reflect, I knew it was going to cause a lot of controversy.' He added that his teammates were also affected by the outside noise, making it difficult for them to focus.

The suspension thrust FIFA’s disciplinary process into the global spotlight. UEFA and former referees expressed their disapproval, highlighting the unprecedented nature of the decision. Balogun acknowledged the confusion he experienced during this period, saying, 'We found out on the team bus. Everybody was like screaming and shouting.'

Despite the controversy, Balogun managed to separate his emotions from the game against Belgium, who went on to win 4-1, knocking the US out of the tournament. He stated, 'We’re all professionals so it’s not something I think was too difficult to be able to separate once we kind of got over the initial announcement that I’d be back in the team.'

The decision by FIFA to suspend Balogun's ban for a one-year probationary period drew attention to the complexities and challenges within football's disciplinary processes. It highlighted the potential impact such decisions can have on players, teams, and the overall tournament.

Balogun’s experience during this incident serves as a reminder of the scrutiny and pressure that professional athletes face in high-stakes competitions.
