Pakistan Urges Restraint Amid Regional Tensions

Key Takeaways

  • Pakistan reaffirmed its support for regional sovereignty and territorial integrity.
  • The Foreign Office called on all parties to de-escalate tensions through dialogue and diplomacy.
  • Tensions escalated after US military strikes on Iran following a container ship incident.

Pakistan has reiterated its commitment to the sovereignty of neighboring countries, urging restraint amid escalating regional tensions. In an official statement from the Foreign Office, Pakistan expressed deep concern over recent incidents that have led to heightened tensions in the region.

The statement emphasized Pakistan’s unwavering support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of all brotherly nations across the region. It called on all involved parties to exercise maximum restraint and take immediate steps towards de-escalation, underlining the importance of dialogue and diplomacy as a means to resolve conflicts.

Pakistan also reaffirmed its commitment to extending all possible support to achieve lasting peace and stability in the region. The Foreign Office highlighted that any conflict must be resolved through peaceful negotiations rather than military action. This comes at a time when tensions have been on the rise, following recent incidents involving the United States and Iran.

On Sunday, the US military launched fresh strikes on Iran after it struck a container ship in the region. Tehran responded by closing the Strait of Hormuz and escalating attacks on US facilities across the Gulf. These actions followed a series of attacks between the two nations over the past several days, leading President Donald Trump to declare an end to a ceasefire that had been in place since February 28.

Iran accused the United States of firing a warning shot that struck a vessel traveling on an unapproved route and warned that any retaliation would be met with a 'severe response.' In contrast, US Central Command stated that commercial vessels continue to transit through the waterway, which carried one-fifth of the world’s oil and LNG shipments before the conflict.

The Foreign Office statement also referred to the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), calling on all sides to uphold their respective commitments under this agreement. Pakistan emphasized its role in supporting regional peace and stability, urging all parties to engage in constructive dialogue to address any issues that may arise.

While tensions remain high, Pakistan’s Foreign Office maintained a cautious tone, focusing on the need for restraint and peaceful resolution of conflicts. The statement underscored Pakistan's commitment to maintaining good relations with its neighbors while ensuring regional peace and stability.
