Fery advances to Wimbledon semi-finals, faces Zverev

Fery advances to Wimbledon semi-finals, faces Zverev

Key Takeaways

  • British wildcard Arthur Fery reached the Wimbledon semi-finals.
  • Zverev secured his place in the semi-finals with a win over Taylor Fritz.
  • Ukrainian Kostyuk also advanced to her first Wimbledon semi-final.

In a remarkable run at Wimbledon, British wildcard Arthur Fery continued his unlikely journey by securing a spot in the semi-finals. The 23-year-old, who is from Farnborough, London, defeated Italian ninth seed Flavio Cobolli with scores of 6-4, 7-6(4), and 6-0 to reach this stage at the All England Club. Fery's achievement has made him only the fourth male wildcard to reach the last four at a Grand Slam event.

Fery expressed his belief in himself during an interview with reporters, stating, 'I’ve always believed in myself and believed that I could be a top player in the world.' He added, 'Obviously, a semi-finalist of Wimbledon is something else. I’ve taken it match by match. I haven’t looked ahead. I’ve just played every match as it is. Yeah, here I am.'

Meanwhile, German second seed Alexander Zverev made quick work of Taylor Fritz with a 6-4, 6-4, and 6-2 victory to advance to the semi-finals. Zverev, who won the French Open earlier this year, attributed his improved performance on grass courts to changes in his game strategy. He said, 'I think winning Roland Garros definitely helps for sure. There’s no question about it.'

Zverev's win came after Fritz suffered a setback due to right knee tendonitis that flared up during the match. Fritz admitted he was caught off guard by the injury and felt his focus was compromised. He commented, 'I don’t want to take away from how well he’s playing. I’m not saying the result would have been any different. He was playing aggressive, doing a lot of things that, I’d say, are big improvements to his game.'

In other news, Ukrainian 12th seed Marta Kostyuk also secured her place in the semi-finals by defeating Italian Jasmine Paolini with scores of 6-3 and 6-2. The match took place on Centre Court amid sweltering temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit). Kostyuk's victory marks her first appearance in a Wimbledon semi-final.

Kostyuk, known for her outspoken nature, did not shy away from discussing hot topics during the match. Her focus and determination were evident as she took the opening set in just 36 minutes. The Ukrainian's fiery performance on court has been a highlight of this year’s tournament so far.

The semi-finals will see Fery face Zverev, while Kostyuk will take on another opponent yet to be determined. These matches promise to be thrilling and provide further drama in what is shaping up to be an exciting Wimbledon.
