US Independence Celebrations Diminished by Foreign Policy Criticisms

US Independence Celebrations Diminished by Foreign Policy Criticisms

Key Takeaways

  • America's 250th independence anniversary was overshadowed by events in Iran.
  • President Trump’s speech at Mt. Rushmore did not indicate a return to inclusive politics.
  • Critics argue America must address domestic issues and change its foreign policy approach.

The United States marked its 250th independence anniversary on Saturday, but the celebrations were marred by events in Iran. High officials from around the world, as well as millions of ordinary Iranians, gathered for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s funeral, overshadowing America's milestone.

President Donald Trump delivered a speech at Mt. Rushmore that did not signal any shift towards more inclusive politics. Instead, his address criticized communism and warned citizens about a new red tide threatening the 'American way of life', while also demonizing immigrants. This came as a stark reminder of the challenges America faces both domestically and internationally.

Domestically, America has made significant strides since its 18th-century origins. It has witnessed the dispossession of Native Americans, the cruel treatment of African slaves and their descendants, and blatant displays of racism. However, over the past few decades, the country has built a relatively equal society with world-class university education and technological innovations.

Despite these achievements, all gains are under threat as the far right is making a strong comeback. The United States, once known for its immigrant-friendly policies, now rails against those arriving from foreign shores. Mr Trump’s speech at Mt. Rushmore did not offer any indication of a return to more inclusive politics or address domestic issues.

Internationally, America's reputation has been tarnished by its foreign policy choices. Countries across Latin America and Asia have experienced bombings and invasions under various pretexts. The latest example is the Iran misadventure, where America’s gunboat diplomacy was on full display. Additionally, many of Mr Trump’s Democratic predecessors supported friendly strongmen in developing nations as an insurance policy against communists and Islamists.

Critics argue that for America to change its ignominious reputation, it must shun exceptionalism and behave like a responsible member of the international community. The US should respect the rights and red lines of sovereign states and focus on addressing socioeconomic issues at home rather than 'saving' the world through military interventions.

Unless there is a radical foreign policy rethink — a remote possibility under President Trump — America’s contributions to the world will continue to be dwarfed by the damage it regularly inflicts overseas. The irony is that while America boasts immense wealth and global influence, its actions often overshadow its merits.
