Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has announced a significant deal with Anthropic, a leading artificial intelligence company based in Silicon Valley. According to the agreement, AMD will sell Anthropic tens of billions of dollars’ worth of AI servers and invest up to $5 billion in the Claude developer.
The investment by AMD is part of its broader strategy to strengthen its position in the AI chip market, currently dominated by Nvidia. This deal marks a strategic move for both companies, as it aligns with AMD’s efforts to gain market share and support its wider AI growth strategy.
As part of this agreement, Anthropic will purchase up to two gigawatts of AMD’s latest-generation Instinct MI450 chips. The deployments are set to begin in the first half of 2027, providing Anthropic with much-needed computing capacity. Each gigawatt of computing power can cost tens of billions of dollars and is equivalent to powering around 750,000 homes in the United States.
AMD’s co-founder and CEO, Lisa Su, stated that this deal was strategically important for both companies. She noted that each major customer win strengthens AMD’s credibility as the second-largest player behind Nvidia. The agreement also supports AMD’s gradual market-share gains and its broader AI growth strategy.
Anthropic has been expanding its computing capacity in recent months to address limitations affecting its services. In May, the company agreed to rent the full computing capacity of SpaceX’s Colossus 1 facility in Memphis, which contains more than 220,000 Nvidia processors and provided Anthropic with an additional 300 megawatts of capacity.
Meta Platforms is also reportedly in talks to lease computing capacity to Anthropic in a potential agreement worth up to $10 billion over two years. Under the AMD deal, Anthropic will use some of the chips in its own data centres and also lease additional capacity through cloud providers and newer AI cloud companies, according to The Wall Street Journal.
AMD shares rose 2.4% following the announcement, reflecting investor confidence in the company’s strategic moves. In October, AMD had announced a separate multi-year agreement with OpenAI, which could generate tens of billions of dollars in annual revenue for AMD and give the ChatGPT developer the option to purchase up to around 10% of the chipmaker.
The deal between AMD and Anthropic underscores the growing importance of AI technology in the tech industry. Both companies are positioning themselves at the forefront of this rapidly evolving market, with significant investments and strategic partnerships driving their growth.
