Muchova eyes Wimbledon glory in all-Czech final

Key Takeaways

  • Karolina Muchova, ranked world number nine, is set to play in the first all-Czech Wimbledon final.
  • The 26-year-old tennis player will face Linda Noskova on Saturday for a chance at her second Grand Slam title.
  • Muchova’s comeback from persistent injuries has been aided by hiring Dutch coach Sven Groeneveld.

Karolina Muchova, the world number nine and a former footballer's daughter, is poised to make history at Wimbledon. The Czech tennis star will face 21-year-old Linda Noskova in the first all-Czech final on Saturday, setting up an exciting matchup that could see her become the sixth Czech Wimbledon women’s champion in four years.

Muchova’s journey from a career in jeopardy due to injuries to a potential Grand Slam winner is nothing short of remarkable. In 2022, she was advised by doctors to quit tennis because of persistent injuries but has since made a significant comeback under the guidance of Dutch coach Sven Groeneveld, who played key roles in the successes of Maria Sharapova and Monica Seles.

The revitalised Muchova has already secured singles titles at Doha and Bad Homburg this season. Her performance against Iga Świątek in the quarter-finals and her thrilling victory over Coco Gauff to reach her first Wimbledon final highlight her current form. 'He has brought calm, a sense of perspective, lots of experience to the team,' Muchova said of Groeneveld.

Beyond tennis, Muchova is known for her love of music. She plays the guitar and draws inspiration from attending concerts by artists such as Shawn Mendes, the Backstreet Boys, Beyonce, and Lady Gaga. 'I always played well after that,' she noted with a smile. At the 2020 US Open under tight Covid restrictions, Muchova even composed a song called ‘US Open Bubble’ about her life there.

Muchova’s passion for reading extends beyond fiction. She prefers autobiographies and esoteric literature over stories, finding more value in educational content. 'The trip to a bookstore in itself is an adventure,' she once said. Her dedication to personal growth is evident as she seeks to use every hour wisely, from good food and coffee to theatre visits.

Muchova’s commitment to giving back is also noteworthy. She has started a charity drive, donating $190 to support her cause. This multifaceted approach to life—balancing tennis with music, reading, and philanthropy—has made her a role model for many young athletes.

I’m healthy, which I don’t like to say – touch wood.
