Pakistan Cricket Board Director Rules Out Win in 2027 ODI World Cup

Pakistan Cricket Board Director Rules Out Win in 2027 ODI World Cup

Key Takeaways

  • PCB Director Aaqib Javed states Pakistan cannot win the 2027 ODI World Cup.
  • Javed says Pakistan must rank among top four teams to have a chance of winning.
  • Pakistan’s current ranking does not guarantee direct qualification for the tournament.

In a recent statement, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Director of High-Performance Aaqib Javed has dismissed any notion that Pakistan can win the 2027 ODI World Cup. Speaking to ProPakistani, Javed stated bluntly: 'We are lying to ourselves if we think we can win the World Cup while being ranked seventh and eighth in the world.'

Javed’s comments come at a time when Pakistan is currently fifth in the official ICC ODI rankings with a rating of 100. However, he emphasized that rankings can fluctuate based on performances in upcoming bilateral series before the qualification cutoff for the 2027 World Cup.

The PCB director has previously stressed the importance of maintaining a strong ODI ranking as part of Pakistan’s preparation for the tournament. He warned that poor results could force Pakistan to compete in the World Cup qualifiers, citing recent examples such as Sri Lanka and the West Indies, who failed to qualify directly for the 2023 ODI World Cup.

Despite Javed's pessimistic outlook, it is worth noting that the qualification route for the 2027 ODI World Cup has been changed. This means Pakistan is almost certain to qualify directly for the mega-event based on their current standing and recent performances.

Javed’s immediate priority for the national team remains to remain among the leading ODI teams and avoid the risk of missing automatic qualification. Once that position is secured, he said, the team can focus on preparing for the conditions in South Africa, where the next World Cup will be held.

The PCB director's comments reflect a cautious approach towards Pakistan’s chances in the upcoming tournament. However, his statements do not align with the current qualification scenario, which suggests that direct entry into the 2027 ODI World Cup is almost certain for Pakistan.

We are lying to ourselves if we think we can win the World Cup while being ranked seventh and eighth in the world.
