Key Takeaways
- Pakistan’s telecom operators will initially offer 5G services through existing data packages.
- Users with compatible devices can access 5G without needing new SIM cards or premium plans.
- Operators expect to introduce differentiated pricing as network investments increase.
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has confirmed that the launch of 5G services in Pakistan will not immediately result in a price hike for consumers, according to an official statement. This assurance comes amid concerns over potential increases in mobile data costs following the introduction of the latest technology.
According to PTA documents, mobile network operators are expected to initially offer 5G services through existing prepaid and postpaid data packages for customers with compatible devices within areas covered by 5G networks. The regulator stated that users would not need to replace their SIM cards or purchase new plans to access the new technology.
In a statement, the PTA indicated that operators are likely to gradually shift towards differentiated pricing as network investments increase. 'Over time, operators may introduce premium packages with enhanced data allowances as 5G requires substantial investment in spectrum acquisition, network modernization and infrastructure deployment,' said an official from the PTA.
To allay consumer concerns over compatibility and affordability, the PTA assured that existing 4G-capable SIMs are sufficient for connecting to 5G networks. Cellular Mobile Operators (CMOs) have also pledged to keep initial tariffs at par with existing mobile broadband services to facilitate mass adoption of the new technology.
Recent nationwide quality-of-service measurements conducted by the PTA indicate that Pakistan’s mobile networks are already delivering speeds capable of supporting advanced broadband services, including 5G. The latest tests recorded average download speeds of 135.42 Mbps on Ufone, 133.65 Mbps on Jazz and 108.66 Mbps on Zong.
The PTA has consistently argued that wider smartphone ownership will be essential for the success of 5G in Pakistan. In separate submissions to lawmakers, the authority urged the government to rationalise taxes and duties on mobile handsets, warning that high taxation is increasing smartphone prices, slowing broadband penetration and delaying digital inclusion, particularly among low-income users and rural communities.
The launch of 5G services is expected to significantly enhance internet speeds and connectivity in Pakistan. However, the PTA’s assurances aim to ensure a smooth transition for consumers as they adapt to this new technology.
