Punjab Forest Rangers Receive Double Cabin Trucks for Patrols

Punjab Forest Rangers Receive Double Cabin Trucks for Patrols

Key Takeaways

  • The Punjab government has provided double cabin pickup trucks to the newly formed Forest Rangers force.
  • The initiative aims to combat deforestation, smog, and air pollution in the province.
  • Critics argue that strengthening existing forest departments could be more effective than creating a new uniformed force.

The Punjab government has equipped its newly formed Forest Rangers with double cabin pickup trucks as part of an initiative to tackle deforestation, smog, and air pollution. The vehicles, which are branded with official Forest Rangers insignia, have been shared by the department.

According to officials, the Forest Rangers force was established to address issues related to illegal tree cutting and protect trees across Punjab. They will be given broad powers similar to police, including the authority to detain suspects and register FIRs against individuals involved in such activities.

The initiative follows a recruitment drive launched by the Forestry and Wildlife Department in June 2026, which resulted in more than 900 offer letters being issued to selected Forest Rangers and Inspectors across 39 divisions under the provincial government.

However, the launch of this new force has not been without criticism. Some members of the public believe that creating another uniformed force may not be necessary and argue that the government should focus on strengthening existing forest departments and improving enforcement through transparent monitoring instead.

The Forest Rangers are expected to operate across Punjab and respond to public complaints received through helpline 1084. The initiative is seen as a step towards addressing environmental concerns in the province, but its effectiveness remains to be seen against the backdrop of ongoing debates about resource allocation.

While the government's move aims to bolster efforts against deforestation and air pollution, critics highlight the need for a more holistic approach that addresses systemic issues within existing departments. The success of this initiative will depend on how effectively it integrates with current enforcement mechanisms and public perception.
