Mbappe criticizes France’s performance after World Cup semifinal loss

Mbappe criticizes France’s performance after World Cup semifinal loss

Key Takeaways

  • Kylian Mbappe described France's World Cup semifinal exit as a result of 'sloppy' play.
  • Spain dominated with superior midfield control, leaving France struggling to establish an attack.
  • Mbappe takes full responsibility for the team’s failure and looks ahead to the third-place match.

Kylian Mbappe offered a candid assessment of France's World Cup semifinal loss to Spain, describing his team as 'too sloppy' in their performance. The French captain highlighted breakdowns both in strategy and execution during the 2-0 defeat in Arlington, Texas.

According to Mbappe, Spain consistently created an extra man in midfield, allowing Rodri and Fabian Ruiz ample time and space to dictate possession. He pointed out that France was three against two in midfield but lacked effective communication on pressing, suggesting a need for more aggressive man-to-man press tactics.

The Real Madrid forward criticized his team's technical execution, noting poor first touches and missed opportunities that prevented them from capitalizing when openings appeared. 'We were too sloppy technically,' Mbappe said. 'We could not hurt them when we could have.'

Despite France entering the semifinal having won its first six matches and scored 16 goals, they struggled against Spain's possession game. Mikel Oyarzabal converted a penalty in the 22nd minute after Lucas Digne fouled Lamine Yamal, and Pedro Porro doubled the advantage shortly before the hour mark.

Didier Deschamps attempted to shift the match by removing Adrien Rabiot at halftime and later introducing Desire Doue and Rayan Cherki. However, these changes did little to disrupt Spain's control, and Mbappe was held scoreless after entering the match with eight tournament goals.

Reflecting on his team’s performance, Mbappe took full responsibility as captain. 'As the captain, I have to take all the responsibility and I have no problem with that,' he said. 'We wanted to go to the final. We didn’t go.'

France will face the loser of Wednesday's Argentina-England semifinal in Saturday’s third-place match in Miami Gardens, Fla., where Mbappe aims to lead his team back into contention.

We were three against two in midfield and against Spain, that’s hard. Fabian and Rodri had plenty of time to play.

We didn’t play the game we wanted, technically, tactically. When you don’t do what you have to do in a World Cup semifinal, you don’t win.
