Iran intensifies attacks on Gulf states amid ongoing US strikes

Iran intensifies attacks on Gulf states amid ongoing US strikes

Key Takeaways

  • Iran renewed attacks on U.S. allies in the Gulf after a seventh night of U.S. military operations.
  • Oil prices rose more than 4% due to concerns over supply disruptions through the Strait of Hormuz.
  • Both sides accused each other of violating rules regarding shipping traffic and naval blockades.

Iran has intensified its attacks on Gulf states, following a seventh consecutive night of U.S. military strikes targeting Iranian military sites including logistics infrastructure. The escalation comes as the fragile ceasefire agreement between the two nations collapsed just one week ago.

The U.S. military's Central Command stated that it employed fighter aircraft, aerial drones, and warships in its latest round of attacks, hitting surveillance sites, military logistics infrastructure, underground weapons storage, and maritime capabilities. More than 50,000 American service members are operating across the Middle East and remain vigilant, lethal, and ready.

Iranian media reported that several missiles struck power facilities and desalination pumps in the southern Iranian city of Jask, cutting off drinking water to villages in the area. The U.S. said its forces redirected four commercial vessels, disabled one, and boarded another to enforce a naval blockade of Iran.

In turn, Iran's Revolutionary Guards claimed that they stopped four vessels from going through the Strait of Hormuz with a combined missile and drone operation. They also reported that two oil tankers exploded and caught fire after passing through a mined route south of the strait, though the U.S. military dismissed these reports as false.

Pakistan is likely to be drawn into this conflict due to its strategic location in the region. The country's involvement could exacerbate tensions further, given its historical ties with both Iran and the United States.

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed concern over the escalation, particularly attacks on civilian infrastructure in Iran and across the region. He warned of potential disruptions to global oil supplies through the Strait of Hormuz, which is vital for one-fifth of the world's oil supply.

Mohsen Rezaei, an adviser to Iran’s supreme leader, warned against U.S. escalation or any attempt to seize Iranian territory. His statement underscores the deepening tensions and potential for a full-scale conflict in the region.
