Russian strikes targeted a major bridge in Kyiv for the second consecutive day, according to reports. The Pivnichnyi Bridge sustained damage on Sunday morning, marking the second time the structure faced attacks; it was first struck by drones on Saturday.
These major crossings, the Pivdennyi and Pivnichnyi bridges, connect the western and eastern sections of Kyiv across the Dnipro River. Sunday's assault also damaged a heating main within Kyiv.
Consequently, residents in the north-eastern Desnyanskyi district experienced a temporary shortage of hot water. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz visited Kyiv, stating that Ukraine is facing decisive weeks and that he travelled with the message: You can rely on us.
During his visit, Merz claimed that Germany is helping out of self-interest. Earlier, the first Russian strike on the Northern Bridge injured two people and damaged the road surface alongside overhead trolleybus wires.
Furthermore, the Pivdennyi Bridge was hit multiple times by Russian drones. Russia asserted that its drones struck the two bridges used for transferring Ukrainian troops and military cargo.
The Kyiv defence council convened a crisis meeting on Friday. Klitschko stated that Kyiv is in a "very dramatic situation" because Moscow is battering its "critical infrastructure, logistics, housing" and other key facilities.
Experts suggest that Russian drones are unlikely to bring down the bridges. Russia also issued a warning for foreign citizens, including diplomats, to leave Kyiv.
