The Green party adopted a policy equating Zionism with racism during a recent debate in the UK. A motion calling for a single Palestinian state passed the vote by a margin of 1,022 votes to 813.
This motion specifically calls for Zionism to be treated as any other form of racism. The primary motion was pushed by Greens for Palestine, advocating for the policy change.
Zack Polanski stated, “Well, in the motion, it is defined as the displacement and genocide of the Palestinian people. I think that is clearly racism.” Conversely, four of the party’s five Members of Parliament condemned the motion.
Carla Denyer warned that defining Zionism as racism risks alienating a significant proportion of Jewish people. Ellie Chowns cautioned that defining Zionism as racism risks reinforcing zero-sum politics.
The Movement for Progressive Judaism condemned the vote, asserting that adopting the motion makes antisemitism party policy. The Movement for Judaism also noted that the Green party does not support the views of the AZM.
Lubna Speitan stated, “We are certainly not here to negotiate the terms of our liberation or oppression with any of our oppressors.” Furthermore, Greens for Palestine encouraged people to join the party to support the agenda.
David Miller presented a show for Press TV, the Iranian state channel, where he stated, “dismantle Zionist organisations wherever they are in the world, including the 3,000 or 4,000 Zionist organisations in this country”. The GfP affirmed the Palestinian people’s inalienable right to self-determination.
