Caroline Darian, who is 47, initiated an awareness campaign across France concerning victims of sexual assault and drugging. Darian launched this campaign after she believed her father, Dominique Pelicot, drugged and assaulted her.
Gisèle Pelicot stated that in 75% of instances of sexual abuse involving drugs, a relative or friend is the perpetrator. The Centre of Excellence on Substance-Facilitated Assaults (CRAFS) operates within the Paris university hospital service (AP-HP).
Darian noted that having her mother's support sends a strong message of hope to victims, showing recovery is possible when launching a campaign of this size. Following a trial, Dominique Pelicot and 50 other men received convictions.
The trial involving Dominique Pelicot took place two years ago. Darian stated that the goal is enabling women to reclaim their narratives, preventing feelings of shame or fear regarding police disbelief, legal system doubt, or lack of family support.
Darian also commented that launching such a large-scale campaign is unusual for an issue not recognised as a public health concern until five years ago.
