Europe records third warmest summer; heat stress affects vast continental area

Europe recorded its third warmest summer, according to recent reports. Western Europe experienced its hottest summer.
Samantha Burgess, climate lead at the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), noted that "One of the things that stands out for 2026 is that the heat was not only remarkable for its intensity, but also for its geographical extent." Furthermore, four of Europe's top ten heatwaves occurred during the past summer.
Fifty-two percent of Europe faced "very strong" heat stress, defined as temperatures feeling hotter than 38 degrees Celsius. On a record forty-one days, approximately eighty percent of the continent endured "strong" heat stress, meaning feel-like temperatures exceeded 32 degrees Celsius.
The summer also brought dry conditions, resulting in the lowest river flows since records commenced in 1992. By the close of August, drought conditions impacted nearly half of Europe.
