Pakistan called on the United States and Iran to uphold their commitments under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding. The request comes as the United Nations Security Council debated the nuclear programme of Iran.
Islamabad served as a primary mediator between the two nations, leading to an interim peace deal signed in June. Hostilities between the US and Iran resumed only weeks after that agreement was finalised.
Ambassador Usman Jadoon stated that "the situation regarding the Iran nuclear file has sharply deteriorated, negatively impacting the consideration of the issue, including in the Security Council." Jadoon noted that profound mistrust and differing opinions have caused a collapse of consensus within the council regarding this matter.
The ambassador described the ground situation over recent months as being defined by continued hostilities and deep tensions. He argued that a diplomatic settlement is now more critical than ever and urged all sides to exercise restraint and avoid destabilising rhetoric.
Jadoon advocated for reviving the spirit of cooperative multilateralism to break the current deadlock. Pakistan expressed gratitude for the support provided by regional partners, including China, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Turkiye.
