Sindh High Court suspends K-Electric tariff decisions, impacting federal subsidy

The Sindh High Court suspended recent rulings from the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) and its appellate tribunal regarding K-Electric’s multi-year tariff structure. This suspension effectively reduced the federal government's subsidy to K-Electric, which is estimated at approximately 200 billion Rupees. Muhammad Aurangzeb, the Finance Minister, chaired the Steering Committee on Power Sector Regulatory Regime and Reform Options on Wednesday. During this meeting, the government is considering political risk guarantees from multilateral agencies and accelerating regulatory reforms for power privatization. Furthermore, prospective bidders requested binding legal guarantees, clearer financial risk allocation, and license terms exceeding the current 20-year limit.
The court issued notices to the respondents and set the next hearing date for 15 October.
