Pakistan’s satellite internet launch is nearing completion, according to IT Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja. Speaking at the Asia-Pacific Telecommunity Symposium, she highlighted the government’s efforts to finalize the regulatory framework after extensive consultations.
The minister emphasized the creation of a more favorable business environment for companies investing in satellite internet services. She also mentioned that three new submarine internet cables have been installed in the country over the past two and a half years.
In addition to the satellite internet, Pakistan has significantly improved its broadband infrastructure. Over 17,000 kilometres of optical fibre have been laid through the Universal Service Fund, and the number of homes passed by fibre broadband has increased from fewer than 3 million in 2024 to more than 5 million.
The minister also noted a reduction in the gender gap in mobile internet use, from 38 percent to 8 percent. Pakistan has introduced 5G technology through a spectrum auction in March 2026, aiming to enhance internet services across the country.
To support internet services in rural areas, the government is working on new licensing and business models. These initiatives are part of a broader strategy to bridge the digital divide and ensure that more people can access the internet.
Furthermore, the government has introduced a technology-based system for fuel subsidies, benefiting over 10 million people. This system does not require a smartphone, making it accessible to a wider population.
The minister’s remarks underscore the government’s commitment to expanding internet access and improving digital infrastructure in Pakistan. The launch of satellite internet is expected to further enhance connectivity and support economic growth.
