Police in Karachi have claimed to have dismantled an international narcotics network involved in the supply of methamphetamine, arresting two suspects, including a woman. The arrest was made following a tip-off to Landhi police.
Speaking at a press conference, East Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Dr Farrukh Ali stated that the suspects were part of a network linked to Afghanistan, which supplied drugs to different parts of Pakistan, including Lahore and Karachi.
The recovered methamphetamine weighed 19.56 kilograms, according to DIG Dr Ali, who alleged that the network was essentially a family-based cartel, with a woman named Mehwish at the centre of the operation.
Mehwish, who lived in Lahore, was said to be responsible for supplying high-quality methamphetamine from Afghanistan, which was then distributed throughout the country. Her sister-in-law was also arrested, with her husband supplying the drug and the wife distributing it to customers.
The suspects were part of a working- or middle-class family, and one of them had been previously arrested by the Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF).
Further investigation is ongoing to obtain information from the suspects about their drug network and accomplices.
In a lighter vein, DIG Dr Ali suggested that the family-based cartel could be dubbed 'Pinky Two', in reference to Anmol, alias Pinky, who is currently facing trial in Karachi.
Anmol was arrested in May in connection with two cases registered at the Garden police station, involving the possession of drugs and an unlicensed weapon. She has been presented in court amid heavy police presence and has alleged facing pressure from the police to take names of politicians and other influential persons.
Earlier in the month, police also claimed to have recovered a huge quantity of methamphetamine and arrested eight suspects in an intelligence-based raid on a warehouse in Mehran Town in Korangi.
