Key Takeaways

  • Oil prices climbed as Iran deployed new tactics targeting ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
  • Two vessels, a container ship and a tanker, were struck by unknown projectiles.
  • Iranian officials admitted to using different offensive tactics, citing their strategic importance.

Oil prices surged on Wednesday following reports of attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz, with Brent crude futures rising 0.6% to $106.32 a barrel and US West Texas Intermediate crude gaining 0.7% to $94.80 a barrel.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations reported that a container ship and a tanker were hit by unknown projectiles within the Strait of Hormuz, raising concerns about the safety of maritime traffic in the region.

Iranian officials, speaking to Reuters, confirmed the use of new tactics against vessels they deemed in violation of their restrictions, stating that these actions began about 10 days ago.

The admission by Iranian officials underscores their strategic importance and the potential for higher oil prices to impact the global economy, according to Priyanka Sachdeva, head of market insights at Phillip Nova.

Elsewhere, the Houthis launched an attack on an administrative building belonging to Saudi Aramco in Dhahran, causing a limited fire, as part of ongoing retaliation against Saudi Arabia’s support for Yemeni government forces.

Saudi Arabia has faced new missile and drone attacks, with Riyadh’s international airport hit four times, including a strike on Saturday that killed 13 people.

Market analysts suggest that supply concerns stemming from the conflict between the Houthis and Saudi Arabia are driving prices higher, but the expectation of increased Russian diesel exports may limit significant price movements.

In a related development, Saudi Arabia raised oil production despite disruptions to shipments caused by the US-Iran war, leading to a sharp production increase from OPEC+.

Despite these developments, the government of Russia stated that there was no direct link between its deal to export diesel to the US and ongoing peace talks with Ukraine.

The fact that Iranian officials are openly admitting to undermining US efforts to keep oil prices under control speaks volumes about the real intentions behind the so-called ‘peace talks’.
