Key Takeaways

  • Punjab government extends vehicle fitness certificate deadline to December 31, 2026.
  • Exemptions granted for cars based on engine capacity and manufacturing date.
  • Owners must obtain certificates after their respective exemption periods.

The Punjab government has once again extended the deadline for obtaining mandatory vehicle fitness certificates to December 31, 2026. This extension follows previous deadlines and aims to ensure compliance with inspection and emissions standards.

Under the new policy, vehicles based on engine capacity and manufacturing date are exempt from fitness certificates for specific periods. Cars up to 1,000cc are exempt for five years from the date of manufacture, while those between 1,001cc and 2,000cc are exempt for six years. Cars above 2,000cc are exempt for seven years.

The initial deadline set by the Punjab Provincial Transport Authority was October 15, 2026, but this was later extended to November 15, 2026, and now to December 31, 2026. Authorities will take action against owners who fail to comply with the certification requirements after the deadline.

Motorists can visit Punjab Vehicle Inspection and Certification System (PVICS) centers to obtain fitness certificates and check their vehicles’ compliance with inspection requirements. The PVICS centers are equipped to provide the necessary services to ensure vehicle safety and environmental standards are met.

The extension is part of the ongoing efforts by the Punjab government to improve road safety and reduce pollution. By providing more time, the government hopes to facilitate compliance among vehicle owners, particularly those in rural areas where access to services may be limited.

The policy aims to balance the need for vehicle compliance with the practical challenges faced by motorists, especially in regions with limited resources. The government has emphasized the importance of vehicle fitness certificates in maintaining road safety and reducing harmful emissions.
