Key Takeaways

  • UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
  • The meeting, lasting six hours, focused on strengthening relations and addressing regional challenges.
  • Netanyahu visited the UAE at the president's invitation, seeking to deny a 2023 warning claim.

UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday, discussing bilateral relations during a six-hour meeting, according to the Emirati state news agency WAM.

The visit, which was confirmed by the Israeli prime minister’s office, aimed to strengthen ties between the two countries and address regional challenges, including Iran.

Earlier this year, the UAE denied that Sheikh Mohamed met with Netanyahu, contradicting an Israeli media report that Netanyahu had ‘secretly visited’ the Gulf country and met with the president in March.

According to Israeli officials, Netanyahu flew to the UAE to ask Sheikh Mohamed to deny having given him a warning in 2023, which Netanyahu had not passed on to Israeli security services.

Netanyahu’s office filed a complaint against a TV channel that reported the visit, stating that the publication endangered the lives of the prime minister and his delegation, including Mossad officials.

The UAE has been strengthening its relationships with the United States and Israel since the 2020 Abraham Accords, which opened ties between the two countries.

The relationship with Israel provides the UAE with a unique channel to influence regional affairs and maintain close ties with Washington.

This meeting comes amid ongoing tensions in the region, particularly with Iran, and highlights the growing cooperation between the UAE and Israel.
