Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) and Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) jointly organised a seminar titled ‘National Dialogue on the Future of Pakistan’s Digital Media’ at the FPCCI regional office in Lahore.
The event, attended by a large number of students, senior journalists, Vice Chancellors of universities, and digital media experts, aimed to explore the emerging opportunities in digital media and its impact on the economy.
Ayesha Manzoor Wattoo, Director General of PEMRA, highlighted the evolution of digital media beyond traditional electronic media, emphasizing its significance in the light economy and its potential for employment and entrepreneurship.
She noted that with widespread mobile phone access, virtually everyone can create and share content, and PEMRA’s role extends beyond content regulation to include a broader public-interest mandate.
Zaki Aijaz, Regional Chairman and Vice President of FPCCI, stressed the importance of educating and training young people in digital media skills, and developing indigenous social media platforms.
Participants shared insights on the need for a responsible, innovative, and digitally literate media ecosystem in Pakistan, focusing on pathways for investment, entrepreneurship, and economic growth.
The seminar provided a platform for dialogue among policymakers, media professionals, academia, and young people, addressing the strategic focus on national security and the national agenda.
Experts at the session also discussed the importance of appropriately regulating social media platforms and enhancing digital literacy among the youth.
Digital media should not be viewed solely through the lens of media and communication, but also as an important component of the light economy, with significant potential for employment, entrepreneurship and economic activity.
