Key Takeaways

  • PPP Lahore President Faisal Mir demands disclosure of official account details for aircraft rental.
  • Criticism targets Maryam Nawaz, alleging misuse of public funds.
  • Calls for sale of aircraft to fund relief for poor in Punjab.

Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) Lahore President Faisal Mir has demanded transparency from the Punjab government regarding the purchase and rental of an aircraft for Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. Mir stated that the government should disclose the bank account details, receipt, and other financial records related to the aircraft rental.

Speaking at a ceremony marking the birthday of PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Mir criticised the government’s policies, particularly the alleged use of public funds to purchase an aircraft worth Rs11 billion. He alleged that the money was collected through heavy taxes on petrol and electricity from the poor.

Mir called for the Chief Minister to explain the source of the Rs17.5 million payment for the aircraft and demanded that her income tax returns and the sources of the alleged payment be made public. He also criticised the government for shifting the burden of inflation onto the poor through further taxation.

He proposed an additional tax of at least Rs50,000 on vehicles above 1500cc, arguing that the burden should fall on the wealthy rather than the poor. Mir stressed that the same legal principles should apply to the ruling party as to the opposition, suggesting that Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani’s disqualification should be a precedent.

Mir’s criticism extended to the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), alleging that their policies were anti-people, with concessions to the rich and inflation for the poor in every budget. He called for the sale of the government aircraft to fund relief for the poor in Punjab.

Party workers and leaders attended the ceremony, with PPP Lahore General Secretary Dr Ayesha Shaukat, Organising Committee Convener Majeed Ghauri, and senior party leader Shahida Jabeen also present. The event was organised by PPP Lahore Vice President Amir Butt.

Mir’s demands for transparency and his calls for the government to address the plight of the poor through fiscal measures reflect the ongoing political discourse in Pakistan, where issues of public finance and social welfare are at the forefront of party rhetoric.

The PPP’s stance highlights the growing tension between the ruling party and opposition, with the former demanding accountability and the latter advocating for equitable distribution of resources.

If verifiable official records of the aircraft rental payment were not presented, it would be assumed that facts had been concealed from the nation.

The same principle under which Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani was disqualified should also apply to the ruling party.
