US President Donald Trump during his official visit to Ireland, touching on sensitive political issues.

Key Takeaways

  • US President Donald Trump expressed support for a united Ireland during his visit to Dublin.
  • His comments sparked reactions from Irish political leaders and parties.
  • UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham dismissed the idea, reaffirming commitment to the Good Friday Agreement.

US President Donald Trump has publicly backed the idea of a united Ireland, stating that a reunification of the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland would be 'a fantastic thing'.

During a two-day official visit to Ireland, Trump met with Ireland's Prime Minister Micheal Martin, where he expressed his views on the matter, despite the sensitive nature of the issue.

The split between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, which has lasted over a century, has been a result of the 1921 partition of the island.

Under the 1998 Good Friday Agreement, a referendum can be held if a majority in Northern Ireland supports joining the Republic of Ireland, but such a vote would also require approval from the Irish people.

Trump's comments drew immediate reactions from various Irish political figures. The pro-British Democratic Unionist Party leader Gavin Robinson expressed opposition, stating that 'as unionists we are not interested in the destruction of our country by joining with the Irish Republic'.

UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham, however, insisted that a unity referendum is 'off the table', reiterating the government's commitment to the Good Friday Agreement.

The Irish government's response was cautious, with President Catherine Connolly conveying the 'strong view of the Irish people that the normalisation of war and genocide can never be accepted' during a meeting with Trump.

Trump's visit to Ireland also included a stop at his luxury resort in Doonbeg, where he was to watch the Irish Open golf tournament, highlighting the personal business interests intertwined with his official duties.

The visit was met with significant security measures, with at least 4,000 police and other personnel mobilised to ensure the safety of the US president.

The way I look at it, it’s going to happen eventually. It may as well happen now.
