New Eye Drops Show Promise in Enhancing Night Vision
Participants in the study report improved night vision after using the new eye drops.

Key Takeaways

  • Opus Genetics' eye drops significantly improve night vision in patients with poor vision in dim settings.
  • Improvement rates increased from 13% to 21% after 15 days of treatment.
  • Results from two late-stage studies demonstrate reduced glare and halos for patients.

Opus Genetics has developed a new eye drop solution that has shown promising results in improving night vision, particularly for individuals who struggle with driving in low-light conditions.

In a recent study, 145 participants with night vision issues, including glare, halos, and starbursts, were enrolled in a trial. They were given either 0.75% phentolamine ophthalmic solution or a placebo for eight or 15 days.

After eight days, 13% of the patients who received the eye drops showed an improvement of at least three lines on eye charts, compared to only 3% in the placebo group. This improvement rate increased to 21% by day 15, while the placebo group remained at 3%.

Participants also reported a reduction in glare, halos, and starbursts, indicating a significant enhancement in their overall night vision problems.

The eye drops work by causing moderate pupil constriction, which can last for at least 20 hours. This effect is particularly beneficial for individuals who have developed night vision issues after procedures such as LASIK surgery.

Opus Genetics has reported encouraging early results from a second Phase III trial, where patients experienced better visibility under oncoming headlights and improved vision in dawn or dusk glare.

The US Food and Drug Administration has granted Fast Track designation to the eye drops for treating chronic night driving impairment, potentially accelerating the approval process.

These findings suggest that the new eye drops could provide a significant improvement in the quality of life for many individuals who face challenges with night vision.
