Lionel Messi has expressed the immense pain felt by Argentina after their World Cup final loss to Spain on Sunday. The 39-year-old forward, who became only the second player to appear in three men’s World Cup finals, said: 'The pain is immense and it's going to take a long time for this wound to heal.'

In a post-match statement shared on social media, Messi reflected on the journey of his team. He wrote, 'But I'll also hold on to all the good memories… the support of an entire country which, together with the hard work and effort of this squad, led us to be, once again, amongst the best in the world.'

The match, played in East Rutherford, New Jersey, saw Spain secure victory through Ferran Torres’s decisive goal after extra time. This result ended Argentina's hopes of becoming the first men's team since Brazil in 1962 to retain the World Cup trophy.

Despite the loss, Messi congratulated his Spanish counterparts and highlighted the pride felt by the Argentine nation. He stated: 'Once again, we managed to come together as a country and stand united.'

Messi’s performance throughout the tournament has been nothing short of remarkable. The Inter Miami forward is not only Argentina's most decorated player but also one of the greatest footballers globally, having won eight Ballon d’Or awards.

His achievements include leading Argentina to the 2022 World Cup and Copa America titles in both 2021 and 2024. Messi’s third appearance in a World Cup final cements his legacy as one of the sport's all-time greats.

While the loss is undoubtedly painful, Messi remains focused on the positive aspects of the team's performance. He praised the hard work and effort put in by his squad, which brought them to the finals once again.
