Iranian Foreign Minister Identifies Peace and Security as Key Goals in Pakistan Talks

Key Takeaways

  • Iran's Abbas Araghchi met with Pakistan’s new ambassador to discuss bilateral cooperation.
  • Interior Minister Eskander Momeni arrived in Islamabad for talks on the US-Iran conflict.
  • Pakistan plays a significant role in mediating between the United States and Iran.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has identified peace and security as key objectives for strengthening relations with Pakistan, according to a meeting held at Tehran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. During his discussions with Pakistan's newly appointed ambassador, Imran Ahmed Siddiqui, Araghchi emphasized the importance of promoting closer bilateral ties between the two countries.

The meeting came amidst renewed diplomatic efforts aimed at halting hostilities between the United States and Iran, following an earlier Islamabad-mediated understanding that collapsed due to differing interpretations. The Iranian foreign minister thanked Pakistan for its role in recent regional developments and highlighted the current opportunity to further strengthen ties with its neighbour.

Following the presentation of his letters of credence, Siddiqui and Araghchi discussed bilateral relations, regional developments, and ways to expand cooperation across various sectors. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening longstanding bonds of friendship and expanding collaboration for mutual benefit.

Meanwhile, Iranian Interior Minister Eskander Momeni arrived in Islamabad on an official visit, where he will hold talks with Pakistani leaders today. Upon his arrival, Momeni was received by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi. During his visit, Mr Momeni is expected to meet Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir.

Pakistan has assumed a prominent diplomatic role in this year’s US-Iran crisis, hosting talks, relaying messages between the parties, and helping broker a temporary understanding earlier this year. The country's strategic position as a mediator is crucial given its close historical, cultural, and religious ties with Iran, despite periodic challenges such as cross-border militant activity and regional security concerns.

Beyond diplomacy, Pakistan and Iran have sought to deepen economic cooperation through higher bilateral trade, greater connectivity between Pakistani ports and Iran, and renewed discussions on the long-delayed Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline. However, progress on many of these initiatives remains constrained by US sanctions on Iran, banking restrictions, and security concerns along their shared border.

The visit underscores Pakistan's continued engagement in regional affairs and its role as a mediator between major powers. As both countries seek to enhance cooperation, the focus will be on addressing mutual interests while navigating complex geopolitical challenges.
