  • Burnham promises to address the cost of living and set out a 10-year plan for the country.
  • He plans to support Ukraine's efforts and make changes in the education system.

King Charles III has appointed Andy Burnham as the new prime minister of the United Kingdom, following the resignation of Keir Starmer. The appointment marks Britain’s sixth prime minister changeover in just ten years, underscoring a period of political instability.

In his first public address from Downing Street, Burnham emphasized the need for stability and improvement: 'Britain needs to show the world that we can regain our stability once again.' He assured Britons that he would provide some breathing space by tackling immediate cost-of-living issues. 'We will help more young people into work by changing the education system and giving them more support, more mental health support,' Burnham stated.

The new leader also outlined his long-term vision for the country, including building more council homes to reduce the welfare bill and meet fiscal rules. He highlighted his commitment to supporting Ukraine: 'President Zelensky will be left in no doubt whatsoever that Britain’s support is steadfast, it is resolute. It will be there for him, and I will be there for him personally too.'

Burnham's first calls would include US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to ensure continuity of support for Ukraine. He promised no change in Britain’s backing for the country: 'There will be no change in our support for Ukraine, and I will support him 100 per cent as my predecessor did.'

The new prime minister also hinted at significant changes within his cabinet, with particular attention on who would replace Rachel Reeves as finance minister. Burnham, a former mayor of Greater Manchester, is seen by the Labour Party as their best chance to counteract Nigel Farage’s influence.

As Britain faces numerous challenges, including economic pressures and geopolitical tensions, Burnham's first steps will be crucial in shaping his government's agenda. His pledge to address immediate issues while setting long-term goals signals a new direction for the country under his leadership.

The appointment of Andy Burnham as prime minister comes at a critical time for Britain, with high inflation and economic uncertainty affecting millions of households. His first actions will be closely watched by both domestic and international observers.
