Mbappe Wins Second FIFA World Cup Golden Boot

Mbappe Wins Second FIFA World Cup Golden Boot

Key Takeaways

  • Kylian Mbappe becomes the first player to win multiple FIFA World Cup Golden Boot awards.
  • He scored 10 goals and provided three assists in six matches during the tournament.
  • His two second-half goals against England increased his career World Cup total to 22 goals.

French footballer Kylian Mbappe has made history by becoming the first player to win multiple FIFA World Cup Golden Boot awards. This achievement was confirmed after Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 in Sunday's final at East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Mbappe, who plays for Real Madrid, scored an impressive 10 goals and provided three assists across six matches during the tournament. His performance was a significant factor as France secured their second-place finish, behind winner Argentina.

The race for the Golden Boot was initially tight between Mbappe and Lionel Messi of Argentina. However, Messi's inability to score in the final match against Spain meant that Mbappe emerged victorious with his two goals against England in the third-place playoff match.

At 27 years old, Mbappe has already established himself as one of the greatest goal scorers in World Cup history. His career total of 22 goals in 22 matches surpasses Lionel Messi's previous record of 21 goals during this tournament.

Eight of Mbappe’s 10 goals were scored through four two-goal performances against Iraq, Senegal, Sweden, and England. This achievement is particularly notable as it ties him with Gerd Müller from Germany in 1970 for the most goals in a single World Cup.

The tournament saw Messi break Miroslav Klose’s all-time World Cup scoring record before Mbappe surpassed him later on. Despite his efforts, Messi could not secure the Golden Boot or help Argentina win their second consecutive World Cup title.

Mbappe's performance was recognized with the Golden Boot award, cementing his status as a key player in international football. His ability to score consistently under pressure and his overall contribution to France’s success make him a standout performer at this World Cup.
