Pakistan’s trade deficit with neighbours surges by 26.62% in Q1 FY27
Pakistan’s exports to China and imports from China have significantly affected the trade balance with its neighbours.

Key Takeaways

  • Pakistan’s trade deficit with nine neighbouring countries increased by 26.62% to $4.97 billion in Q1 FY27.
  • Exports to Afghanistan and Bangladesh declined significantly, while imports from China surged.
  • The bilateral deficit with China widened by $858.808 million, accounting for 82.18% of the increase.

Pakistan’s trade deficit with nine neighbouring countries widened by 26.62% to $4.97 billion in the first quarter of the fiscal year 2026-27, compared to $3.93 billion in the same period last year, according to the latest data compiled by the State Bank of Pakistan.

The increase in the trade deficit reflects a contraction in Pakistan’s exports to regional markets, particularly to Afghanistan and Bangladesh. Exports to Afghanistan, including exports, have remained suspended since October 10, 2025, further impacting overall export performance.

Imports from China rose sharply during the July-September quarter, contributing significantly to the widening imbalance. The bilateral deficit with China widened by $858.808 million, accounting for approximately 82.18% of the increase in the combined deficit with the nine countries.
